Just a few quick pics to show what I'm doing. More to come as I make headway.
I have added some copy to help explain what's been hapnin'.
This is the donor bed. A typical replacement for the guys who want to go from the 7x10 to 7x12. Why is it that there is a 4" difference from 10"to 12"?
Anyway, I bought the 12" kit and waited breathlessly. By the way, I took this picture after I made the first cut ...or 2... thats why it looks odd.
This is the separated bed after the first cut. I decided to cut the bed in front of the web of the first leg. I was looking at 30+ inches of bed. Not all of it was going to be used, but.......
I also decided that the left over leg would help support and add rigidity. And rigidity seems to be one of the most important factors in this conversion.
This is what I started out with... Homiers 7x12 Speedway Series machine.
This is the end of the bed after I cut and filed and shaped and filed and filed and filed.........
I shaped it so that the extension would fit under the original bad and I was sure to lleave a good
"foot" on the leg to make room for a hole to bolt the extension down
This is an end view so you can see what I cut out under the bed. Yes I hand filed this area also. The tailstock moves back and forth quite easily.
Here is the almost completed big'un. The original lathe is still intact, and I'm getting ready to use it to cut down the lead screw.
As I write this. I've finished the leadscrew and I'm to the HARD part. Doing the final alignment. WOW! this is frustrating. I'm perfectly level vertically from one end to the other
according to the dial indicator. I'm 3 thousandths off horizontally at the seam and 12 thousandths off horizontally at the end.
After two hours of work....no change! OUCH!!!!!! Back to it Monday.
MORE TO COME!!
Here it is in all it's Speedway Series Blue
Glory! The 7x30 "mini" lathe! It's very close to being "finished" I'm still making adjustments to
the alignment as I go , but it's usable.....and blue!
Well, I've gotta prove it works so here are some action pics. As I was making these cuts, I discovered what a couple of
thounsands of ways thickness meant. I had to handfile some more. BOO!....HISS! Anyway, her it is in action. these shots
were really made as the lathe was working. I am working on a 23" workpiece here. It's a PVC coilform. Soft, but still needs accuracy.
