ONE ANOTHER/EACH OTHER – NEW TESTAMENT COMMANDS

ONE ANOTHER Greek: allelous – means “everyone to everyone” i.e it must be exhaustively reciprocal, which means that it refers to something that every single person does to every single other person. But the word is used in many other contexts where it doesn’t mean “everyone to everyone”, but “some to others.” Eg. In Galatians 6:2, “Bear one another’s burdens” means not “everyone should exchange burdens with everyone else,” but “some who are more able should help bear the burdens of others who are less able.”

It is important in life that we treat others the way we ourselves want to be treated.  There are many people in this world who are the center of their own universe and the only thing that matters to them is what someone else can do to better their life.  We should never fall into this mentality of only wanting for ourselves and not pay any attention to the feelings or benefits of those around us.  The Lord Jesus declares in Luke 6:31 “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.”  When the Lord was on the earth, the only thing He wanted to do was help others.  We must not be a respecter of persons, but rather treat all people equally with the same love that Jesus our example showed to all whom He came into contact with.

Jesus healed the blind and crippled, set free those who were oppressed of the devil and forgave the sins of those who fell before Him.  Jesus never looked for His own benefit and as our example calls us to do the same. (Romans 1:21-25) (John 6:38-40) (John 6:2) (Matthew 8:16-17) (Matthew 10:7-8)

I would encourage you all to do your own personal bible study. Other people’s work may be helpful to our growth but it is not a substitute for our own bible study. [Knowledge that is not applied is dangerous, that is why they say ignorance is bliss – but they have not read ‘people perish for lack of vision/knowledge’]

There are many ways to study and meditate on Gods Word. Above is an example of a how one may do an in-depth study. It will be interesting to concise the whole study into one short essay, sermon or bible study. You may have never thought about it, why don’t you give it a try?

Nowadays many believing Christians read popular day-by-day devotionals. In most of these books, a relevant inspirational excerpt or story draws a lesson from a suggested Bible reading. One reason for the popularity of this kind of devotional guide is that it has a short, memorable lesson that is both inspiring and applicable to daily life.

One caution in using this kind of guide, however, is the temptation to just read the story and skip the Bible reading for the day. Once this becomes a habit, the believer can find his life built on inspirational thoughts instead of the Word of God—a spiritual life that is built on very shaky ground.

If you use one of these devotional guides, be sure to read the Bible passage along with the stories that illustrate the biblical truth. If we build our lives on anecdotes and excerpts rather than on the Word of God, we can develop an improper view of the Christian life and may be setting ourselves up for a fall. God has promised to bless His Word, not our illustrations about it (2 Tim. 3:15-16).

How you can prepare a study like this one?

·         Assuming your topic is one another/eachother.

·         Enter the words one another and each other in the search column at any Internet bible word study website. E.g. visit http://www.biblegateway.com Restrict the search to the New Testament only, then copy and paste the results of the whole page on to a word file titled One-another or Each-other commands.

·         Delete references that are not relevant to the theme you have chosen then

·         Print all the pages

·         Pick subtopics or a series as per the theme you would like to follow, write down the verse as it is in different bible versions mentioning the version chosen

·         If you find other similar bible references on the same subtopic then write it down as a cross-reference separately. Each subtopic is written on a separate page.

·         Do not pick all, choose the ones that can best illustrate or explain the main theme or idea that you have in mind. Such as positive, negative. Dos or Don’ts etc.

·         Refer to various commentaries and illustrations. Consider your own experiences. Your testimony can help others.

·         Work on each subtopic at a time. Do not make haste. Work prayerfully, if time permits you will do well to discuss with your pastor or friends. Some may consider handing over the study to their pastor after completing the study.

·         Any Christian new and old can work on such a study as each bible verse compliments the topic. Without explaining the topic or the verses you are able to get the message across. Those who are called will go a step further by explaining and expounding; this may include illustrations, application methods, commentary, bible references etc.

·         Don’t be discouraged if you are not recognized, surely you will grow and be blessed after doing the study. God will be delighted and appreciate your work. This style of study can be used in many ways. [a] Print as book for serious readers [b] Small group bible study [c] Create a screensaver [d] Create albums on webshots.com [e] Good idea for creating a poster illustration.

APPROXIMATELY 25 BIBLE VERSIONS WERE USED AND ABOUT 60 HOURS SPENT ON THIS STUDY. IT WAS EXCITING AND FUN, I DO NOT KNOW OF A BETTER WORD TO DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE.

Wish you the best
