The spiritual lineage of Congregationalism traces to the Pilgrims who landed in
Plymouth,
Massachusetts, in 1620 seeking religious freedom. They brought
Congregationalism to America,
the foundation of which was defending
the right to individual interpretation of the scriptures
and the belief that a pastor's role
is to stimulate thinking rather than make rules.
